When someone has died

We're so sorry. If the person you've lost kept recordings with us and named you as someone they trusted, this is how to let us know. There's no hurry — nothing is ever deleted while a family might still come for it.

What to send us

Write to us at:

hello@intheattic.space

Please write from the email address they knew you by — the one they gave us for you. In your email, tell us:

  • your name,
  • their full name, and the email address they used with The Attic,
  • and attach any one of these:
  • a copy or photo of the death certificate,
  • a published obituary, or a notice from the funeral home (a link is fine),
  • or a short statement, signed by you, saying that they have died.

Whichever is easiest is fine. A death certificate simply means a shorter wait.

If all you have is a signed statement, and they named more than one trusted contact, we'll also need one of the others to write to us, from their own email address, to confirm. It's a small extra step that protects people from a mistake. If you were the only person they named, your statement is enough.

What happens next

  1. We write to them first. Before anything else, we email the account holder at every address we have, in case there has been a mistake. If they are still here, one tap from them stops everything.
  2. Then we wait. 14 days with a death certificate, 30 days with an obituary or funeral-home notice, or 90 days with a signed statement alone (and, if they named more than one trusted contact, a second one confirming). Some people ask us to wait a little longer than that, and we do.
  3. A person looks at every case. Nothing is ever passed on automatically. Someone on our team reads what you sent and checks it before anything is released.
  4. Then the recordings reach you. Each of the trusted contacts they named gets an email with a link. You'll be asked to sign in with your own email address — the one they gave us — so the recordings open only for you.

Good to know

  • Only the people they named as trusted contacts can tell us. If that isn't you, you can still write to us and we'll help however we can.
  • Some people choose to accept only a death certificate, or ask that we don't take reports at all. If so, we'll tell you gently what that means.
  • Recordings of someone who has died are never deleted because a payment stopped, and never put behind a paywall.
  • We confirm only that the recordings should be passed on. We don't decide anything about an estate — The Attic is a keepsake, not a will.

A real person answers, usually within a day. The full detail is in our Terms and on how we keep your stories safe.
